Where will my
trees be planted?
At Butterswood Farm
we have a site of approximately 5 hectares which
was originally known as `Tunnards Plantation' and
planted in the early 19th century. Some of the
woodland remains but there is an opportunity for
further woodland creation. We are also exploring
the possibility of acquiring other woodland
sites.

During the Second
World War there was a major airfield at Goxhill (American
Air Base - U.S.A.A.F. Base 345, Fighter Training
Group, U.S. Eighth Air Force) which had several
outlying accommodation areas of which Butterswood
was one. All the huts which housed pilots and
military policemen have long gone, but an old
water tower and air-raid shelters still remain.

After the war the
woodland was felled and replanted, principally
with sycamore trees, which form the woodland you
see today.

The whole farm
includes the woodland, meadow, and arable land
approximately one third each in area.

Our new planting is
already ongoing and extending the existing
woodland.

This view shows some
of the site available for planting trees.

And some routine work
being carried out in the existing mature woodland
area.
